EMPLOYER GUIDELINES

McGill University Career Services

McGill University Career Services supports students and recent alumni (graduated within the last three years)
in their career planning, employment, and transition to further education.

We are committed to supporting students and recent graduates in developing self-directed career management skills, researching and identifying organizations and industries that best align with their identity, and making informed decisions about their careers and work opportunities. We value collaboration with employers who support us in these goals.

Non Endorsement Statement

McGill University does not endorse or recommend employers, and employment or volunteer postings on the myFuture do not constitute endorsement or recommendation. The University is not responsible for the practices of employers or conditions of off-campus employment opportunities. The University makes no representations or guarantees about the employment or volunteer postings, or accuracy of the information provided by the employers. Students and graduates are responsible for researching organizations and verifying the employment terms and conditions with the employer before applying to or accepting opportunities.

Misleading Practices

McGill Career Services reserves the right and full discretionary power to revoke all privileges granted to employers and organizations who engage in misleading practices and inappropriate behaviour. Depending on the particular circumstances of each case, this right of revocation may be exercised by McGill with a prior written notice or without notice.  Circumstances where the revocation of an employer may be implemented by McGill include without limitation:

  • Suspected fraudulent activity (i.e. a student is asked to receive/deposit/send money or credit card information)
  • Misrepresentation of an organization (i.e. posing as an employer, employee or retained recruiter)
  • Inappropriate activity (i.e. harassment, requests for photographs)
  • Undisclosed cost to the student (i.e. a student is asked to pay a fee)
  • Other activities in violation of legal and policy requirements

Disclosure of Information

To support the career education of our students and their ability to make informed career decisions, we require that employers disclose important details during their recruitment process.

Employers offering work-from-home positions must clearly state the work environment and equipment necessary for the position.

Organizations requiring students to pay a fee and/or cover the costs specifically for their participation in a volunteer opportunity, in Canada or internationally, must disclose this in the posting.

Job Postings

All positions listed with the Career Services must include the name of the organization and a contact name. The Career Services will not post positions for organizations that request money in the form of application fees, donations or investments, as part of the job application process. In all cases, the Career Services reserve the right to decline postings and to determine which organizations are invited to attend career events and sessions.

Third-Party Recruiters

Third-party recruiters are defined as agencies, organizations, or individuals recruiting candidates for temporary, part-time, or full-time employment on behalf of others and not for their own needs. Third-party recruiters are requested to disclose the name of their client to the Career Services and may also be required to disclose the client's name on the posting seen by students. Employers who hire on behalf of privately owned schools, for teaching positions abroad, are considered third-party recruiters.

Entrepreneurial Opportunities

Employers offering entrepreneurial opportunities may be eligible to post their positions on the myFuture. Organizations that engage in one or more of the following practices are considered to offer entrepreneurial opportunities:

  • Provision of sponsorship for setting up a business for the purpose of selling products or services and/or recruiting other individuals to set up their own business
  • Compensation based exclusively on commission and/or fees or percentage of sales
  • Requirement of initial investment for either a product or service, including a franchise, training session or a starter kit

All the initial investments, such as licensing, administration or related fees, requested from applicants, must be indicated in the job posting. Career Services reserve the right to request a copy of the employment contract to keep on file for students to read.
